Since the Renaissance, puppets have accompanied street vendors to attract customers and, in the 17th century, became the principal repository of comic characters. Puppet theater was denied entry to the royal theaters in France, which led to the creation of performances on the Parisian boulevards. Guignol was created in the early 19th century in Lyon.
