The alligator is a dangerous carnivore with an extraordinarily powerful jaw. Only the great white shark bites harder. Interestingly, it’s only the muscles that close the jaw that are so powerful; the muscles used to open the mouth are so weak they could be restrained with a simple piece of tape. Compared to the saltwater crocodile, the alligator is smaller and noticeably broader. It lives exclusively in rivers and lakes in the southeastern United States and in China.
