Inspired by the sporting success of the 300 SL (W194) in competition from 1952 onwards, the famous Austro-American car dealer Max Hoffman managed to convince the Daimler-Benz management to build a production version of this emblematic car. And so the 300 SL was unveiled at the New York Motor Show in February 1954.
The 300 SL (W198) stands out for its innovative engineering, in particular its tubular chassis, both rigid and light, weighing only 50 kg. It is one of the very first GT (Grand Tourisme) cars and ranks among the fastest vehicles of its day, able to reach 250 km/h.
With its elegant, legendary design, the 300 SL (W198) is instantly recognisable by its 'Butterfly' or 'Gullwing' doors, a feature faithfully reproduced on our model. Those iconic doors are functional: they really do open.
