Considered by many to be the most famous aircraft the world has ever seen, the Supermarine Spitfire was one of the first all-metal monoplane fighters, at a time when many of the world's air forces were still equipped with biplanes. Having made its reputation in the aerial combat of the Battle of Britain, the Spitfire went on to serve throughout the Second World War and earned the distinction of being the only Allied fighter to remain in continuous production during the conflict. Its beautiful elliptical wing makes the Spitfire instantly recognisable, and the aircraft's stunning looks masked the fact that it was a deadly combat machine, constantly improved to match anything else in the air. In the years following the end of the Second World War, the iconic Spitfire passed into the hands of many private collectors around the world and became a popular sight on the airshow scene. With many airframes restored to flying condition in the post-war years, there are probably more Spitfires flying today than at any time since the end of the Second World War, and they are sure to play a major part in commemorations of the Battle of Britain.
