The war brought the serial publication of this adventure to a brutal halt on 9 May 1940. Back then, neither Captain Haddock, nor Professor Calculus, nor Marlinspike Hall had yet joined the Tintin saga. Eight years later, Tintin magazine ran the episode again. With his wonderful sense of humour, Herge folded the once-absent characters into the overhaul of the adventure he set out to finish. In 1950, the album was published. But the world was changing, and to keep pace with current events, a slightly reworked new version was offered to readers in 1971.
