In the black-and-white version of Cigars of the Pharaoh (plate 22, panel C2), after narrowly escaping certain drowning, Tintin and Snowy meet a singular character, Senhor Oliveira da Figueira. A figurehead, or rather the star attraction of travelling salesmanship, this likeable Portuguese merchant is the perfect embodiment of the peddler stereotype.
His patter is so persuasive that the two survivors leave with their arms full of trinkets and gadgets of every kind.
