By Toutatis, this is not yet another book about the Gaulish hero but an undertaking beyond compare, a reference work that will quickly become essential to Asterix fans.
With a thousand illustrations, rare archive material from private collections and unexpected sources, this offbeat dictionary leaves nothing out: albums, cartoons, films, characters, it is all there!

The book draws on dozens of previously unpublished interviews with Albert and Sylvie Uderzo and Anne Goscinny, but also with the writers, voices and actors who left their mark on the series on the small and big screen: Pierre Tchernia, Alain Chabat, Édouard Baer, Roger Carel... not forgetting Alain Delon and Gérard Depardieu!

With plenty of humour, the author reveals anecdotes still unknown to the general public about the albums, but also about the theme parks, advertisements and assorted oddities, parodies and foreign editions. This compendium also explores the writing of scripts, the making of storyboards, the theatre and the historical context. More than a hefty volume: a menhir!
The book is illustrated with images from the albums, along with a great many rare pictures (merchandise, foreign posters, unusual objects) or unpublished ones taken from the Pilote, Uderzo and Goscinny archives, from private collections and from those of the BnF, the French National Library.

A film historian, Philippe Durant is the author of the Dictionnaire insolite des Tontons flingueurs and Le Petit Audiard illustré par l'exemple (Nouveau Monde éditions). He produced the DVD extras for the Asterix - Gaumont Trilogy box set, as well as the extras for Asterix and the Vikings for M6. This book accompanies the release of the 39th album in the series, Asterix and the Griffin (21 October).
