Who is Shiva?

He is usually depicted either deep in meditation or, as we see in Cigars of the Pharaoh (p. 50), dancing the Nataraja.

In Sanskrit, Shiva means "the auspicious one, the one who brings good fortune". In Hindu practice, Shiva belongs to the Vedic pantheon and is viewed differently from one tradition to another: in the Shaiva tradition he is regarded as the supreme God, while in the Smarta tradition he is seen as one of the five primary forms of God.
